OUR HIDDEN SECRET SURROUNDED BY BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS
AND AMAZING TEA PLANTATIONS

The Tea Story

The Tea Cottage is a luxurious boutique resort situated in the midst of Greenwood Estate Nawalapitiya , sprawling over 200 acres of lush green tea plantation, 2750 feet above sea level in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. From the ancient past and bygone eras of Kings and Dynasties, the region of Nawalapitiya in the Kothmale valley had been famous for cultivation of herbal plants and spices for the royals. The confluence of rich soil and apt weather conditions augers well for the same. Plentiful water ways, Streams and Springs together make agriculture the main livelihood of the locals. British planters had first cultivated Coffee in these estates which were subsequently destroyed by an outbreak of a virus called ‘Hemileia Vastratrica’ in the year 1840.

Afterwards, Tea was planted in these lands instead of Coffee as an export crop . The British planters managed the plantations till 1960 after which those were bought over by Sri Lankan planters.

Ancestors of the present management acquired the estate and managed it as a family concern since then. Picturesque surrounds of the property to be seen today are the results of unstinting devotion of the management who developed the property to an excellent tea plantation what it is at present.

The Tea Cottage is an extension of the Greenwood Tea Estate & Factory intended to open up its captivating surrounds to the ardent nature lovers. In 2013, the construction of the Tea Cottage was initiated and today it stands a finest piece of eco-friendly resort resting in the silent and peaceful environs contiguous to the eastern peripheries of the estate.

Greenwood Tea Story

Ever wondered how that bright green leaf turns into the golden beverage? The Guided Factory Excursion will help you grasp all about it. The artisanal process established by the Britisher's over a century ago is still practiced to date with tender care to preserve high quality of the product.

Greenwood Estate & its glorious Tea Factory was passed down by the Britishers in 1962, to an ardent local tea connoisseur Late Mr. Bandara who assumed the property. Late Mr. Bandara was the father & grandfather of the second & third generations respectively to the Bandara Family, who are the current incumbents of this wonderful property. Since taking over from the Britishers, this entrepreneurial business family has transformed the business step by step, little by little, nurturing its values very carefully and preserving its age old traditions and genteel culture to what it is today. You will be able to hear everything about the history of tea from the colonial days and garner the entire school of knowledge on the processes, activities and beautiful tails of the art from them who are very sincere and courteous.

Treading through the trails in the middle of mesmerizing tea fields to behold the nifty plucking of the Tea Leaves by dexterous female tea pluckers completes the first phase. You too would be given the opportunity to engage in plucking if you so wish to.Then you will be taken to the factory where our expert factory guide will walk you along the whole process one by one, explaining all the nitty-gritty of the Tea Story. The architecture , machinery of colonial era itself carry interesting history and tales that would be narrated while on the move.

Don't forget to take a bit of hands-on experience along the way and the snaps for your memories. Factory Guide will arrange this for you. A freshly prepared cup of finest Ceylon Tea, prepared in the very same factory, is served to you at the end of the factory tour, invigorating you for the rest of your day.
