Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a world-renowned place of worship, where the left Canine tooth of Gautama Buddha is enshrined. The temple which is venerated by thousands of local & foreign devotees and tourists daily was named as a world heritage by UNESCO in 1988.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a world-renowned place of worship, where the left Canine tooth of Gautama Buddha is enshrined. The temple which is venerated by thousands of local & foreign devotees and tourists daily was named as a world heritage by UNESCO in 1988.

The temple which carries a lot of value to Buddhists all over the world also has immense cultural value. The architecture is of unique Kandyan architectural style with a combination of the unique style used to build “Dalada Mandira” the shrines which housed the Sacred Tooth Relic previously in other kingdoms.

The temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is built in the city of Kandy near the ancient Royal Palace which is situated to the North of the temple and the forest reserve called “Udawaththa Kelaya” to the East. The famous Kandy Lake also known as “Kiri Muhuda” to the South and “Natha & Paththini Devala” on the West. The temple is adorned with intricate carvings using gold, silver, bronze, and ivory.

Dress code please be dressed in white or light colored clothing, avoid dark colored clothing, short trousers skirts & frocks

International Buddhist Museum

The museum showcases the history of buddhism around the world and artefacts associated with it. It is divided into sections and galleries dedicated to various countries that are connected to buddhism. Although it is not very big, the museum displays are well laid out and maintained. Overall, a good place to spend some time to get to know the history of buddhism. Photography is not allowed inside the museum. It is located behind the temple of the tooth.

Tusker Museum

The carcass of Raja, the tusker who for many years carried the tooth relic in the Kandy perahera, can be seen in this museum. The tusker died on 6th July 1988. The records of the tusker, from his birth to the work he did for the Dalada Maligawa, can be found here. Visitors walking to the King's palace will see the museum

Kandy National Museum

The museum has over 5,000 artefacts from the Kandyan and British eras. Among the exhibits are royal relics, jewelry, coins and many more, most of which belong to the 17th and 18th centuries. A copy of the 1815 agreement which handed over the Kandyan provinces to the British is on display. The museum is in what once was the lower palace building which was built during the reign of King Sri Wickrama Rajasingha and was used by queens of the royal court. It is a showcase for architectural features of the Kandyan period. Opening times are from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sunday, Monday and all public holidays.

Ceylon Tea Museum

This multi-functional four-storey museum in a converted tea factory which is nearly 100 years old, is set in immaculate grounds landscaped with different varieties of tea bushes. The museum has a library and an auditorium with facilities for audiovisual presentations and a sales outlet where purchases can be made from a selection of Sri Lanka's finest teas. At the very top is a classic tea café and a telescope for a peek at panoramic Kandy city surrounded by the hunnasgiriya knuckles mountains. Easily accessible from Kandy city, the museum is at the 8 km drive up the winding hantana road.

Highway Museum Complex

Sri Lanka’s first highway museum, it has a collection of construction equipment some of which is more than 175 years old. The machinery on display include stone road rollers, steam road rollers, oil road rollers, tar boilers, coal scales, road signs and a model of the Bogoda wooden bridge. The museum is maintained by the Road Development Authority and is located in Kiribathkumbura.

National Railway Museum

The museum was opened on 27 December 2014 to mark 150 years of Sri Lanka railways. It has a display of old engines, locomotives, rail cars, trolleys, carriages, machinery, and equipment that have been used since the beginning of rail services in the country. The museum is owned by Sri Lanka Railways, and is located in Kadugannnawa.

Bahirawakanda Temple

The temple on the hill of Bahirawakanda, called the Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya, is most well known to tourists for its giant Buddha statue, which can be seen from almost any point in the city of Kandy. Built in 1972, the statue shows Lord Buddha seated in the Nirvana pose, which is the position associated with his first Enlightenment. Reaching a height of more than 25 metres, it is one of the tallest statues of Buddha in Sri Lanka.

Royal Botanical Garden

The oldest formal gardens in sri lanka, its origin dates as far back as 1371 when King Wickramabahu III ascended the throne and held court in Peradeniya.in 1821, Alexander Moon laid the groundwork for the present-day gardens. Spread over 147 acres, they have more than 4,000 species of plants including medicinal ones, palm trees, spices, and its renowned collection of orchids. The gardens are managed by the Division of National Botanic Gardens of the Department of Agriculture. It attracts around 2 million local and foreign visitors annually. The gardens are located approximately 5 km to the west of the city of Kandy.

Udawatta Kale Forest Reservoir

A moist monsoon type of forest of about 105 ha, it is of historical importance and also essential to maintain a balanced ecology in the Kandy area. King Senasammatha Wickramabahu, who established the Senkadagalapura kingdom, built his palace in this forest area which later came to be known as Udawatta Kale. The forest is rich in biodiversity with high numbers of endemic flora and fauna. There are approximately 405 plant species and over 100 species of birds, mammals, butterflies, lizards, snakes, and amphibians. The watershed areas in Udawatte Kale, Dangolla, Watapuluwa and Bandiyawatte are important water resources for agriculture. The forest is of immense value to researchers and academics
